Sweet Corn Sunnyvee (Large) - Ontario Seed Company
Zea mays
Sunnyvee is our top Normal Sugary (SU) variety for cool soil planting, making it an ideal choice for gardeners in more northerly areas or those who want an early start to their season. This hybrid produces short, sturdy plants with ears that average 18 cm long. Its classic flavour and dependable performance make it an excellent variety for freezing, allowing you to enjoy the taste of summer long into the year.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
For a successful crop, plant sweet corn only when the soil has warmed to at least 18°C.
Planting: To ensure proper pollination, plant at least 3 to 4 rows. When planting in rows, space seeds 10-15 cm apart, later thinning to 20-30 cm apart. Rows should be spaced 55-75 cm apart. Alternatively, corn can be planted with 3 to 4 seeds per hill, in hills spaced 30 cm apart. Germination occurs in approximately 10 days.
Care: Work a good general vegetable fertilizer into the soil at planting, keep weeds under control, and ensure the soil is evenly watered throughout the season. Irrigation is essential.
