Perhaps the most spectacular flower in the early summer garden with its brilliant red flowers and rich green foliage. Plants die back and go dormant during the summer. Try planting large flowering annuals immediately after poppies finish blooming or interplant late flowering perennials with established poppies. Avoid over-watering while dormant. Some suggested perennials to interplant: sage, coneflowers, daylilies, and lilies. Divide and transplant oriental poppies while they are dormant. Reaches a mature height of 75 cm. Hardy to Zone 3.

How to Grow

Start indoors in a soil-less mix in late February or March. Do not cover seed as light helps induce germination. Germinates at 20° C in 21 days. Grow-on under lights at slightly cooler temperatures before hardening off and planting out after the danger of frost has passed. Outdoor sowing should take place anytime from May to mid-July or again in late fall for flowering in the following season.
