Ornamental Corn Blue Hopi Large - Ontario Seed Company
Zea mays
Discover a legacy of the Hopi Native American tribe with our Heirloom Blue Hopi Ornamental Corn seeds. This unique corn holds a special place in history and provides a dual purpose for your garden. While its stunning blue kernels make for a beautiful and meaningful fall decoration, the corn can also be eaten as a sweet treat when young or dried and ground into a high-protein flour for delicious homemade tortillas.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Blue Hopi Corn grows best in a sunny, wind-sheltered site with well-drained soil and a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
Planting: Sow seeds only after all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Planting any sooner can delay germination and increase the risk of damage. Sow seeds in rows 10-15 cm apart, then thin to 30 cm apart with the rows 90 cm apart. To ensure proper pollination, plant at least 3 to 4 rows.
Care: Work a good vegetable fertilizer into the soil at planting. Keep weeds under control and irrigate frequently throughout the season. Sufficient water is particularly important at flowering and when the cobs begin to fill. Cobs are ready for harvesting when the silks turn dark brown. To check for optimum maturity, gently peel back a section of the husk and press your thumbnail into a kernel. If the liquid is a milky colour, the corn is ready. If clear, the corn is immature.
Approx. 100-125 seeds/pkt
