Papaver somniferum

Grown as a mainstay of the classic English country garden, these annual poppies are hardy and drought-tolerant. Bright scarlet red blooms have a striking black base. The seeds, which contain no active compounds, are great for baking. Easy to grow, the dried seed-heads are perfect for crafts.
