Phaseolus vulgaris

A classic of Italy known as 'Fire Tongue' beans, loved for their excellent flavor, color and versatility. The decorative beans can be picked and used fresh or left to grow on. Mature beans can be shelled from the pods and dried; these can be prepared and served as dried flageolet or Cannellini.

How To Grow

Sow these vegetable seeds directly into dark/damp soils that as been well prepared with compost and/or aged manure. Sow in rows spaced 10-15cm apart.

These beans need warm soil conditions and will not germinate if it is too cold. Thin out or transplant to 12 in (30cm) between plants. Hoe regularly to keep down weeds. Water well in dry periods and particularly when the flowers are forming. Pick regularly when still young to encourage continuous cropping right up until May.

Additional fertilizing not required as legumes produce their own nitrogen.

When To Plant Spring to late Summer. Autumn too in warmer zones.
Harvest 8-10 weeks

Important Note

Ensure seeds are not sown too closely together & that each plant receives equal amount of sunlight. Climbing runners may result if the plant is stressed.
Spray flowers with water misting spray to assist with flower & pod set.
