Lupinus

This favourite June/July blooming perennial is valued for its tall, colourful spikes of blue. Requires moist soils in full sun to light shade. Height 60-90 cm. Hardy to Zone 5.

How to Grow

A somewhat finicky perennial to start, it requires a cooler temperature of 16° C for germination (which normally requires about 20 days). Soak seed for 24 hours prior to sowing indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost date. After germination, grow on under lights at the same temperature before hardening off and transplanting to the garden in a sunny site. Direct garden seeding can also be done late in the fall. Soil pH levels may affect the colour of the flowers resulting in a purplish hue.
