Lettuce Lolla Rosso - Ontario Seed Company
Lactuca sativa
This beautiful Italian loose-leaf lettuce is admired for its striking appearance and mild flavour. It produces dark red, tightly curled leaves that taper to a lighter green centre, adding a vibrant burst of colour to any garden or plate. Lolla Rossa is a versatile variety, perfect for use as a garnish or for adding visual interest to a salad blend. Its slow-to-bolt nature ensures a longer and more consistent harvest.
What you need to know to Plant & Grow
Sowing: Sow as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring, then every two weeks thereafter to ensure a continuous supply. Sow about 3 mm deep in rows 45 cm apart.
Care: Lettuce is a sun-loving, cool-weather crop that grows best in organic, well-drained soil. An even supply of moisture during the entire growth period is imperative for success.
Harvesting: You can harvest leaf lettuce by either pulling the entire plant or by cutting leaves from the main stem at least 2.5 cm above the base—this will allow the plant to sprout new leaves. Once lettuce bolts (starts to produce a rapidly growing flower stem), the leaves become bitter.
Germination: Germination occurs in 7-10 days.
