Lettuce Great Lakes - Ontario Seed Company

Lactuca sativa

Introduced in the early 1940s, this crisphead variety is a real gem, just like its namesake region. It produces large and solid, nicely formed heads that are a joy to behold. It’s a vigorous, disease-resistant variety that withstands hot, dry weather better than any other. When you get a head lettuce this good, you’ll know you’ve found a keeper, ready to ride out any storm.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Sowing: As soon as the soil on the shores of your garden can be worked in the spring, sow seeds about 3 mm deep in rows 45 cm apart. For a constant flow of fresh lettuce, keep planting every two weeks.

Care: Lettuce is a sun-loving, cool-weather crop that grows best in deep, rich organic soil. An even supply of moisture is imperative for success—you want to keep things flowing, just like a freshwater stream! Gradually thin seedlings to 30 cm apart to give ’em all the room they need.

Harvesting: When your lettuce is a solid head, just cut it off at the base. But don’t wait for it to start bolting, because once that happens, its leaves will get bitter.

Germination: You’ll see it emerge from the soil in about 7-10 days.
