Iris ensata – Kogeshō (or “Kogesho”)

Iris ensata, commonly called Japanese or water iris, is prized for its wide, flat blooms and affinity for moist soils. The “Kogeshō” (variant spelling) is presumed a cultivar within this group, likely featuring elegant, showy flowers suited to moist or bog-edge plantings. Expect large, flat blossoms in mid to early summer with broad falls and gracefully arching falls and standards. The foliage is upright, sword-like, adding vertical interest even when not in bloom.
