Dennstaedtia punctilobula, commonly known as the hay-scented fern, forms elegant, soft, lacy fronds of yellow-green that arch gracefully to create a light, feathery carpet in shaded or semi-shaded gardens. When the fronds are brushed or crushed, they release a delicate scent reminiscent of freshly mowed hay, a charming trait that gives it its common name. It spreads by rhizomes and is effective as a groundcover in moist, humus-rich soils, naturalizing in woodlands, shady banks, or under trees. The foliage turns golden or yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest even after fronds die back.
