Squash Kurihomare Kabocha - Ontario Seed Company

Cucurbita

The Kurihomare Kabocha Squash is a stunning winter squash celebrated for its superior culinary qualities. This variety produces large, glossy green fruits that average 2.27 kg in size, setting well on vigorous vines. Inside, the flesh is a bright yellow with a wonderfully sweet, nutty flavour and a highly desirable, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Perfect for baking, roasting, or using in stews and soups, Kurihomare is a must-grow for winter storage.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Winter squash requires a long, warm season and plenty of space to sprawl.

Sow Outdoors: Direct sow seeds into rich, well-drained soil after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is thoroughly warm (late May to early June). Plant seeds in hills or mounds.

Sow Indoors (Optional): Start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before transplanting using biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance.

Germination: Seed typically germinates in 7 to 10 days.

Planting Depth: 2.5 cm

Seed Spacing: 40 cm

Thin to: 2 to 3 plants per hill (about 60 cm apart)

Row Width: 240 cm (allow vines to sprawl)

Provide a site with Full Sun and consistently moist soil. Reduce watering once the fruits mature. Harvest Time is approximately 100 days after planting, when the vines begin to die back and the rind is hard and resistant to scratching. Cure in the sun for 10 days before storing in a cool, dark place.

Approx. 10 seeds/pkt
