Beet Chioggia - Ontario Seed Company

Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris

A beautiful and delicious Italian heirloom, the Chioggia Beet is a home garden favourite. This variety produces light red, flattened globe-shaped roots with striking interior rings of alternating pink and white. With a classic “old country” taste, it is a truly unique addition to Your Garden and your kitchen.

What you need to know to Plant & Grow

Beets thrive in sandy loam with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

Planting: For a continuous harvest, sow seeds 1.2 cm deep and 2.5 cm apart in two-week intervals, beginning when the soil has warmed to 7°C. Avoid sowing after mid-July. Germination takes 8-10 days.

Care: As each beet ‘seed’ contains 2 to 5 seeds within, it is important to thin the young seedlings to 7–10 cm apart to allow for proper root formation. The thinned plants can be used as a source of tender, edible greens. Remember to fertilize. Note that the beautiful ring pattern of the root will fade after cooking.

Approx. 125 seeds/pkt
